Accessibility

Ebbe should be usable without a mouse, without colour, and at whatever text size you read at. This page says how far that has got — and what is known not to be there yet.

What it aims at

The target is WCAG 2.1 at level AA, for this website and for the application. Nobody has certified that: there has been no external audit, and nothing below is a compliance claim.

What works

• Everything can be reached and operated with the keyboard. A skip link at the top of every page jumps past the navigation, and a dialog keeps the cursor inside itself and hands it back to whatever opened it.
• The charts carry their figures as a table for screen readers, so no number is behind a mouse-over.
• Text can be made larger. The application has a text size setting of its own, and both it and this site follow the browser’s.
• If your system asks for reduced motion, Ebbe stops animating.
• Colours were checked against their backgrounds in the dark theme and the light one, and colour is never the only thing carrying a meaning.

What is not there yet

Said plainly, because a statement listing only successes is not worth reading:

• No part of Ebbe has been tested with a screen reader by somebody who uses one every day. It has been tested with a screen reader by somebody who does not, and that is not the same thing.
• A chart can only be read as its table. There is no way to move through the drawing itself with the keyboard.
• The longer texts, the manual above all, have not been checked against any plain-language standard.

If something is in your way

Please write to kontakt@ebbe.onl and say what you were trying to do and what happened instead. Something that stops you using Ebbe is a fault like any other and will be treated as one. I usually reply within a few days.
